Male voice: The following presentation will provide information for overseas doctors wishing to work as a GP in the NHS.

Are you a qualified GP from outside the UK and looking to work in the NHS?

As you have no previous experience of working in the NHS as a GP, the International Induction programme is designed to help you get into NHS general practice. A career as a GP is a rewarding one, but can also be challenging and diverse, and this programme provides a supported, safe and direct route into the profession.

Once you have checked that you qualify for the programme and hold the necessary licences, qualifications along with the appropriate visa, starting the application is straightforward and support is available along the way.

The first step is to ensure that your medical and GP qualifications are recognised by the General Medical Council. For further information, please contact them to ensure that your current qualifications meet the required standards for registration or whether additional evidence will be required.

Once your qualifications have been recognised by the GMC, you are now able to apply for the English Medical Performers list via Primary Care Support England. You will have a review based on your circumstances and experience, and be placed on the International Induction Programme, which is eligible for bursary funding plus additional support.

Details are available on the National Recruitment Office website. You will need to register with the NRO to get started and will then have access to online resources.

Once you're registered, you'll have a local contact to help guide you through the process and answer your questions.

Following the review, depending on your needs and experiences, you may be able to provide a portfolio of evidence. In other cases, you may be required to complete the Multiple Choice Questionnaire assessment. This can be undertaken in the UK or at certain selected overseas venues.

In either case, this is followed by a supported clinical placement in an approved practice. The supervised clinical placement is in a GP surgery and tailored to meet your educational and personal needs. It will include a workplace based report to permit final approval of your placement by NHS England and then entry to the Performers List.

The International Induction programme is for doctors who are qualified as GPs but have no experience of working in the UK. The programme has been jointly developed and supported by NHS England, The General Medical Council, The Royal College of General Practitioners and the British Medical Association.

This programme is designed for GPs who have never previously worked in NHS General Practice in the UK.

All GPs are required to be on the General Medical Council (GMC) GP register with a License to Practise, and be on the England Medical Performers List (MPL) before they can practise.

The IIP must be completed before GPs can be approved for full inclusion on to the MPL as an independent NHS general practitioner.

The UK is made up of 4 countries and this guide concerns applications made to practise in England. If you're applying to practise in another part of the UK, please visit the appropriate regional website:

Important: Health and Care Worker visa requirements

From 1 January 2021, all European Economic Area (EEA) nationals (except Irish citizens) and international doctors will require a Health and Care Worker visa to work in the UK. For details on Visa applications and support from NHS England when applying, visit the Health and Care Worker Visa requirements for non UK citizens webpage.

Features of the programme

Once registered you will have a career and educational needs review with a local educational lead to approve your application and give you access to the online resources.

You will be given access to a Self-Assessment which is required to be completed prior to the above review.

You will also gain access to a dedicated educational lead to help guide you through the entire process. They can provide support such as:

  • developing a personal educational pathway suited to your needs
  • coordinating any assessments that you may be required undertake
  • finding a suitable practice that is able to offer you a placement or offering advice in relation to undertaking the programme whilst employed by a practice
  • guidance on completing forms and paperwork
  • assistance with arranging occupational health assessments

The programme also includes a range of assessments, such as placements to support GPs on their journey to NHS general practice.

The assessments can be tailored to fit around needs and personal commitments. Further information can be found on the Self-Assessment for the IIP page.

Financial support is also available for candidates, which includes:

  • help with costs such as indemnity and a monthly clinical placement bursary of up to £4,000 or equivalent salary
  • help towards the costs of child or social care
  • help with visa costs and sponsorship

Further information regarding help with funding can be found on our financial support and funding page.
