The Return to Practice (RtP) programme has a number of pathways that are tailored to various circumstances.
Please read each requirement overview carefully, as they will help decide your progression through the programme.
Learning Needs Assessments (LNA) route
The LNA is for GPs who have previously worked in the NHS as a GP but have not been working for 2 years or more. This programme will require:
- an MCQ assessment consisting of two papers, a Clinical Problem Solving MCQ and a Professional Dilemmas MCQ (also known as the Situational Judgement Test)
The portfolio route is for GPs who have previously worked in the NHS as a GP but have not worked in the UK for 2 to 10 years but have been working in an equivalent Primary Care role elsewhere. This programme will require:
- evidence of current clinical work is submitted in a Portfolio to the RCGP panel for review
- a one-month re-orientation in a GP placement
Medical Performers List (MPL) Refresher route
This pathway is to support GPs who have remained on the Medical Performers List (MPL) for longer than 24 months, but who have not been working in an NHS primary medical care setting or clinical role during this period.
The programme is to assist the local NHS Improvement and England (NHSEI) Medical Director to assess your individual needs and plan any support required to allow a safe re-entry to a clinical GP role.
This programme will access the existing RtP LNA route to support your return to General Practice. To do so, the Medical Director must agree that the GP needs to access the programme tools to enable them to enter this pathway and undertake a supported return to NHS primary medical services.
Please contact your local NHSEI team as the first step, and visit the MPL refresher route page for further information.
Emergency Registered Practitioner (ERP) returner programme
The emergency registered practitioner (ERP) returner programme is for GPs who had been off the MPL and GMC GP register, and have already re-joined the NHS workforce on the temporary GMC ERP via the Fast-Track Covid-19 approval process. Specifically, for those who may wish to fully return to work as an NHS GP again. To apply for this route, please fill in and submit your ERP registration form alongside the RtP application form.
Once you have decided which pathway is appropriate to your circumstances, download and complete the RtP programme application form.
