Intensive Care Medicine ST3

You must hold a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS, MBBS) degree or other equivalent medical qualification.

You must:

• Be eligible to work in the UK
• Hold full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) at the time of application, and hold a current licence to practise on the date your post commences
• Meet the standards set out in Good Medical Practice, and not be subject to fitness to practise conditions which would prevent you taking up the post or performing fully within it

You must not

• Hold, nor be eligible to hold, a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), nor
• Already be eligible for the specialist register for this specialty, including through the Portfolio Pathway.

You must be able to provide complete details of your employment history, including any gaps.

• You must complete all sections of the application form fully and truthfully, in accordance with written guidelines
• You must disclose in your application if you are subject to any ongoing fitness to practise proceedings or are subject to any fitness to practise conditions
• If you are currently in specialty training and applying to continue training in the same specialty in another region, you must obtain a Support for Application to another region form signed by the Training Programme Director/Head of School of your current Specialty Training Programme. This must confirm satisfactory progress and be submitted with your application
• If you have previously resigned, or been removed from a training programme in any specialty, you must obtain a Support for Reapplication to Specialty Training form signed by the Training Programme Director/Head of School and Postgraduate Dean from the region you previously undertook training in. This must be submitted with your application

Capability/Competences

Applicants from an Anaesthetics background applying for single ICM CCT training after 2 years of core level anaesthetics training

You must have achieved CT1 and CT2 competences from a UK anaesthetics core training programme by the advertised post start date for the vacancy. This can be evidenced by one of the following methods:

• Current employment in a UK anaesthetics core training programme at CT2 level at the time of application. Evidence of ARCP outcome 1 for CT1 and Educational Supervisor / College Tutor confirmation of being on track to complete CT2 must be provided with your application. Confirmation of ARCP outcome 1 for CT2 is mandatory before the commencement of ICM higher specialist training.
• Successful completion of CT1 and CT2 in a UK anaesthetics core training programme. Evidence of ARCP outcome 1 for CT1 and CT2 must be provided with your application.

All other applicants from an Anaesthetics background applying for single ICM CCT training or dual CCT training

You must have evidence of achievement of Stage 1 Domains of Learning in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine (including Initial Assessment of Competency) or equivalent. This can be evidenced via one of the following methods:

• Employment in a UK Core Anaesthetics / ACCS Anaesthetics Training Programme at the time of application which leads to achievement of all required Stage 1 Domains of Learning by the advertised posts start date for the vacancy evidenced by a Stage 1 Certificate / Stage 1 Equivalence Certificate, or 
• Completion of a UK Anaesthetics/ACCS Anaesthetics Core Training Programme at the time of application, evidenced by Stage 1 Certificate / Stage 1 Equivalence Certificate; or 
• Current employment in a UK anaesthetics post (a non-training grade post) at the time of application and achievement of all required Stage 1 Domains of Learning evidenced by a Stage 1 Certificate / Stage 1 Equivalence Certificate by the time of application; or 
• The Confirmation of Stage 1 Equivalence Certificate is to be used if you have not completed a UK core training programme but have all the required competencies by the ‘time of application.  
• If you have taken time out/worked OOP/fellowships/research, then a Basic Level Training Certificate (BLTC)/ Core Level Training Certificate (CLTC) for anaesthesia on/dated before August 2021 is acceptable for consideration of entry to single ICM CCT.

Experience

You must have at least 24 months’ experience in Anaesthetics and/or Intensive Care Medicine (not including Foundation modules) by the advertised post start date for the vacancy (of which at least 18 months should be in Anaesthetics).

If you wish to be considered for Locum Appointment for Training posts (where available): you must have no more than 24 months experience in LAT posts in this specialty by the advertised post start date for the vacancy.

Professional examinations

You must have Primary Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) by the offer date.

Capability/Competences

You must have evidence of achievement of CT1/ST1, CT2/ST2, and CT3/ST3 ACCS Emergency Medicine competences, by the advertised post start date for the vacancy. This can be demonstrated by one of the following methods:

• Current employment in a CT3/ST3 Emergency Medicine training programme which leads to successful completion of ST3 competences by the advertised post start date for the vacancy.
• Successful completion of a UK ACCS Emergency Medicine programme, supported by satisfactory ARCP outcome. This must be submitted with your application. 
• A completed Alternative Certificate of Readiness to Enter Higher Emergency Medicine Specialist Training, submitted at the time of application 

Experience

You must have evidence of 36 months’ training at CT1/ST1, CT2/ST2 and CT3/ST3 level in ACCS specialties. This must include a minimum of:

• 12 months in Emergency Medicine.
• 3 consecutive months in Acute Medicine.
• 6 consecutive months in Anaesthesia.
• 6 consecutive months in Intensive Care Medicine.
• 3 consecutive months in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.

Experience in the above posts must be gained within a post that is specifically within the named specialty i.e. not combined with another specialty.

For posts not GMC approved for Emergency Medicine or ACCS training, acceptable evidence is:

• A completed Alternative Certificate of Readiness to Enter Higher Emergency Medicine Specialist Training, submitted at the time of application AND
• A letter on hospital headed paper confirming dates, grade and specialty for each post, submitted at the time of application.

All experience in the ACCS Emergency Medicine specialties must be gained and evidenced by the time of application

If you wish to be considered for Locum Appointment for Training posts (where available): you must have no more than 24 months experience in LAT posts in this specialty by the advertised post start date for the vacancy.

Professional examinations

By the offer date, you must have either:

• Been awarded Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MRCEM).  
• Completed Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM) Intermediate Certificate.

Capability/Competences

You must have evidence of achievement of the capabilities required by completion of year 2 of the Internal Medicine Stage 1 curriculum. This can be evidenced using one of the following methods:

• Current employment in one of the following programmes which leads to successful completion of year 2 of Internal Medicine Stage 1 Training by the advertised post start date for the vacancy: 
  • UK Internal Medicine Stage 1 Training.
  • UK ACCS (Internal Medicine).
  • UK Broad Based Training (medicine route).
  • UK core medical training or ACCS (acute Medicine).
  • A JRCPTB internationally level 3 accredited equivalent Internal Medicine Stage 1 Training programme.
• Successful completion of one of the programmes listed above at the time of application, evidenced by satisfactory ARCP. This must be submitted with your application.
• An acceptable version and satisfactorily completed Alternative Certificate to Enter Group 2 Higher Physician Specialty Training. This must be submitted with your application.

Experience

You must have sufficient whole time equivalent experience working in medical specialties (not including foundation level experience) by the advertised post start date for the vacancy. This can be via by:

• Completing training in one of the following programmes:
  • The first two years of UK Internal Medicine Stage 1 Training
  • The first three years UK ACCS (Internal Medicine)
  • UK Core Medical Training or UK ACCS (Acute Medicine)
  • The first three years of UK Broad Based Training (medicine route) 
  •  JRCPTB internationally level 3 accredited equivalent Internal Medicine Stage 1 Training programme or
• Having at least 24 months’ whole time equivalent experience in medical specialties (of which at least 12 months must include the care of acute medical in-patients). Experience in certain acute care common stem specialties can be counted towards the 24 months in some circumstances.

Professional examinations

You must have any of the following:

• MRCP(UK) Part 1 at time of application and MRCP(UK) full diploma by offer date.
• Completion of Irish Basic Specialty Training in medicine and Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) full diploma by offer date.
