Retraining as a GP - Dr Raghuram Shivram
GP Partner in Leicester. Previously a Child & Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist
Having done MBBS and MD in Paediatrics in India, I trained in Paediatrics in the UK to complete the DCH and MRCP (Paediatrics). I worked as Staff Grade in Paediatrics before training in Psychiatry in the East Midlands to complete MRCPsych ending up as a Consultant Psychiatrist for Children and Adolescents in Leicester for 4 years before embarking on GP training.
Why did I change?
Blending physical and mental health, working closely with families to provide birth to death care, working in a team, offering prevention in conjunction with curative care, working in different settings such as the GP surgery, urgent care centres and home visiting. I like the unpredictability and variety of clinical problems that patients present and the work-life balance. These were good reasons to attract me to GP land that I relished as I pursued my GP training in East Midlands. I now work as a GP Partner.
The GP training programme in East Midlands is comprehensive, supportive and trainee friendly making it a pleasant experience.
With plenty of career prospects - be it clinical, teaching, research or management, being a GP is an attractive, enjoyable and rewarding career for any doctor wanting to offer holistic patient centred care.
